Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) Explained - Cubic Cms
Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) technology introduced by Hyundai Motor Company India in July 2020. It's a clutchless manual transmission car but not an AMT version car and the gear changes manually but not a car with manual transmission. It's a semi-automatic transmission-based car. It's a cost economic and user-friendly technology that is built to terminate the use of the clutch pedal for hassle-free driving in busy city traffic. The owning cost is just a little bit more than a manual transmission car and far lower than the AMT car.
In an iMT car, a dual pedal system (brake and acceleration) has been used only and the gear will be changed manually by the driver through an electromechanical functioning. iMT is clutch-less for driver convenience and gear arrangement like a conventional manual gear is given to enjoy the real car driving pleasure.
iMT does not use torque converter, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) like an automatic transmission. It is a regular manual transmission the same as an 'H' pattern without a clutch pedal while clutch engagement and disengagement are controlled/actuated internally. iMT and AMT both come without a clutch pedal but iMT gives the control to the driver for shifting gear manually and AMT provides automatic gear shifting.
In iMT, you can start the engine by taking gear in the neutral only. After the engine starts, leave the brake slowly and it will start moving, press the acceleration pedal to pick up more speed.
Working of Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) System
An intension sensor has been given with the transmission gear shift (TGS) Lever. When a driver wishes want /wishes to change the gear, the intension sensor on the shift lever gives the signal to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). TCU actuates the hydraulic actuator by forming a hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure received by the Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) through the clutch tube and it uses this pressure to engage and disengage the clutch.
Advantages of Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) System
- Intelligent Manual Transmission cars come with a manual gearbox but the driving experience is more pleasurable than AMT because of the desired torque control and enhanced mileage with the great performance.
- iMT increases the engine's efficiency and a smoother driving delight.
- The iMT car without a clutch pedal is a privilege in very busy city traffic while you have to pay only INR 16,000 more than a manual transmission gearbox car.
- iMT car is budget-friendly and provides easy driving in the hill road area also.
- Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet have come with Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) based technology in India.
